Publicist Jerry Digney also confirmed the news to a media outlet. The couple had been married for 60 years. They met on a blind date in 1962 set up by their friend and fellow comedy icon Buddy Hackett. The couple subsequently tied the knot in 1963.

His wife Ginnie was by his side throughout his television career. When he starred as a clinic psychologist Bob Hartley on The Bob Newhart Show from 1972 to 1978. And later in Newhart when he played an innkeeper in Vermont named Dick Loudon from 1982 to 1990.

Ginnie has been credited with coming up with the finale for the Newhart series where it was revealed that everything had been a dream and Dick Loudon existed merely in the imagination of Bob Hartley.

The twist in the finale has long become one of the most favorite moments in television history for a lot of people. Ginnie would often appear in the background of a lot of shows for Newhart. In the 1970s game show Tattletales, the couple would often appear together.

The couple shared four children, Robert, Tim, Jennifer, and Courtney. They also have grandchildren. Newhart’s publicist also confirmed that a private memorial service will also be held for Ginnie in the coming weeks.
